Tiny birds, I love ‘em. This juvenile yellow warbler has been in my rotation for a few years now, but each iteration brings something new. This VERY small work (2.5 x 5.5”, $45) is an oil painting on a slick masonite scrap that has some sweet little rounded edges thanks to my metal file. The masonite’s slickness caused me to work with a more heavily loaded brush than usual, which gave some nice textural effects to the feathers. I’ve played with modulated backgrounds before, but thought that would be too busy for such a tiny piece. This way, the Happy Warbler takes all the attention.
