When Madeleine was a freshman at ND, she called me one evening while watching The Blues Brothers with a bunch of marching band friends. She realized that “Half of what you say, Mom, is a quote from this movie”. So true. The last few days of my new job often make me think of that great scene when Jake shows Elwood “the light” at the Triple Rock church. I’m almost under that bright beam…as my to-do list of Google slide shows and IEP accommodation checklists and technique schedules and-and-and is now just one page. Instead of two :).
My new high school students are thoughtful young people, challenging and inspiring. They’ll begin their first extended mixed media project tomorrow, a sketchbook/art journal cover that includes at least three aspects of their persona. Here’s my sample, the cover of my own art journal I’ll work on as the students fill theirs with teenage creativity.
My students wrote to me about what they hope to learn from me, everything from “draw better” to “how to express myself because I don’t know how”. I’m very much looking forward to all of it, but…Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, don’t fail me now :).
