A few years ago I stumbled upon the fantastic work of painter Karin Jurick http://www.karinjurick.com/ZemArt/Welcome.html. Her painting just makes me smile–the freshness of it, the brushwork, the color. She was also kind to me a few years back, when I struggled with a commission–giving me some much needed tips and and some empathy for the process.
Karin paints small, on panels rather than canvas, and often starts with a black ground. I’d wanted to try this for awhile, exercising my brain to add the mid and light tones to dark rather than the other way around…and what fun it was. I stumbled upon these little black chalk boards for $1 at a craft store by work, and within a couple hours of painting these little birds “backwards”, I was hooked.
This St. Louis Cardinal (sure, it’s the state bird of Virginia, but my real home is St. Louis!) lives on my bedroom wall, but prints of him can be found here http://fineartamerica.com/featured/cardinal-anne-lewis.html.
